Semaglutide and Tirzepatide
Semaglutide, also known by it's trade name, Ozempic®, is a prescription medication that can assist patients achieve their health and weight goals. This prescription medication works by controlling hunger and insulin levels, therefore restricting the amount of food consumption and assisting in weight loss. Initially prescribed for patients with diabetes, semaglutide was found to have safe and significant weight loss benefits. It is administered via a simple and painless subcutaneous injection and has been proven safe and reliable in clinical studies. Becasuse it works so well, it has become extremely difficult to consistently obtain due to a worldwide shortage and high cost.
Tirzepatide is also known by their trade names, Zepbound® and Mounjaro®. It is similar to semaglutide but works on two recptors in the body (dual agonist), where semaglutide works on only one. Because of this, tirzepatide has been shown to be extremely effective with weight loss. According to a study from the New England Journal of Medicine, Tirzepatide resulted in 15-20% weight loss! In a head-to-head study, tirzepatide resulted in increased weight loss when compared to semaglutide.

What is the difference between Semaglutide and Tirzepatide?
Both medications have similar mechanisms of action and are administrated by a weekly subcutaneous injection. According to a recent study, patients using semaglutide lost 3.6% body weight at 3 months, 5.8% at 6 months, and 8.3% at 12 months.Those using tirzepatide lost 5.8% at 3 months, 10.1% at 6 months, and 15.3% at 12 months.

Is it safe? What are the risks?
It is generally considered safe when taken as directed. As with any medication, there may be risks and side effects such as nausea, constipation, heartburn/reflux, GI disturbances, fatigue, allergic reactions, or low blood sugar among others. When used correctly, side effects are usually minimal and transient. They can be minimized with dietary changes, B-12, or nausea medications if needed. Most patients have very few symptoms other than not feeling hungry! These can be discussed with your provider during the consultation. You will have to notify your practitioner of medical conditions or pertinent family history as well.
How does the clinic work?
We are local - not a faceless online company. Our conveniently located office has free parking and easy in and out access. You will meet Brian Whitman, PA-C, MS, in the office or virtually to discuss options and go over a medical history. If we feel that a treatment options is right for you, you will receive medications either in the office or mailed directly to your home. Injections are once per week and are painless! We will provide you with all necessary supplies. Then, just watch the weigh fall off. It's as easy as that.
